Biography & Interests

I am an Americanist and a comparativist. Since 1995, my research has been focusing on antebellum American literature and culture, and, in particular, on the intellectual history and philosophical aesthetics of the American Renaissance. In more recent years, I have discovered the productivity of the adoption of a hemispheric perspective in the study of the Americas and the complexity of the constantly interacting cultures of the dual continent. At the same time, the transoceanic lens I often use in my research allows me to reflect upon the evolution of the Western culture in a broader context of the trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific dynamics of the development of the narratives that importantly, albeit transiently, determine the discourses of self-identification in Asia, America and Europe. Currently, I hold the position of an Associate Professor of American Literature and work as Chair of the Department of American and Canadian Studies at the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. At the same time, I am the director of the University of Silesia Press in Katowice. I hold a Ph.D. in Literary Studies (granted by the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2000) and an M.A. in English (granted by the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań in 1995).
