Biography & Interests

I am a researcher in distributed computing systems, with a speciality in topics relating to fault-tolerance, consistency and security for applications requiring high assurance. Software I created ran the NY Stock Exchange for a decade and still operates the French Air Traffic Control System (also used in many other European countries), the US Navy AEGIS warship and the virtual synchrony model I invented is widely used in modern cloud computing platforms such as IBM's websphere, Microsoft's cluster management software, etc. I was the 2009 winner of the IEEE Tsukomo Kanai prize and the 2009 IEEE TPDS Outstanding Research Contribution prize, am an ACM Fellow, and hold the Rama Rao Chair of Computer Science at Cornell University.

Recently, my focus has been on a new system I'm building, called Isis^2, aimed at making it easy for people to create cloud computing solutions with strong assurance properties: rapid guarantees responsiveness, fault-tolerance, security, virtual synchrony
